Get a Free Tree at the Big TREEsy Giveaway in New Orleans

New Orleans residents have a wonderful opportunity to enhance their gardens and contribute to the greening of their city by picking up a free tree at the NOLA Tree Project’s next Big TREEsy giveaway. The event is scheduled for Saturday, March 2, from 8:30 a.m. to noon, hosted at St. Roch Community Church, located at 1728 St. Roch Ave.

During this event, the organization plans to distribute 400 young trees on a first-come, first-served basis. To ensure fairness, each family is limited to one tree, and participants must present a picture ID proving residence in any part of Orleans Parish.

Attendees can choose from an impressive variety of thirty-five different species of trees. Options range from various magnolias like the Little Gem, Japanese, Sweet Bay, and Southern Magnolia to other favorites such as the Japanese Maple, Sweet Olive, Pecan, and Live Oak. Additionally, the selection includes Sycamore, Bald and Pond Cypress, Red Maple, several oak varieties, Weeping Willow, Mayhaw, Crape Myrtle, Tulip Poplar, and more, ensuring a match for every gardening need and aesthetic.

Moreover, for those interested in fruit-bearing trees, the event will feature a special sale of Plaquemines Parish citrus trees. Available varieties include Meyer Lemon, several types of oranges and limes, as well as Bumper, Owari, and Arctic Frost Satsumas. Prices for these citrus trees start at $50 each. Other fruit trees such as Celeste Fig are available for $35, while Arbequina Olive and Joey Avocado trees are priced at $60 each.

The Big TREEsy giveaway is made possible through partnerships with Entergy, State Farm, and the Department of Parks and Parkways. The NOLA Tree Project, the organizing body, is dedicated to planting trees across New Orleans in public green spaces, parks, churches, and schools. With an annual distribution of approximately 3,000 trees through their Big TREEsy giveaways, they play a crucial role in fostering urban forestry and enhancing environmental sustainability in the city.

This event not only offers free trees but also promotes community involvement and urban beautification. It’s a perfect opportunity for New Orleans residents to make a positive impact on their local environment while enjoying the benefits of planting a new tree in their own yard.
